Being your own master is a cherished dream of many. The day no longer has to start by the early morning sound by the window of clicking and clomping of heels reminding you that you need to rush. You do not need to squeeze yourself among hundreds of commuters with deadpan faces lost in thoughts that they themselves would not know what those are about. Being able to choose what to do, when to do and how much to do free you from the corporate grind. No longer your soul is pawned to the devil.
A professional qualification helps in realizing the dream of being a freelancer. However, that’s only the start. This dream can soon turn into a nightmare. There cannot be a slip up. There cannot be any cover up. The buck stops with us. Freelancing is not about being free from being responsible and accountable. While being at the beck and call of our clients, we must manage client expectations and ensure that our engagement is as transparent to our client as possible. Also, there will be often involvement of third-party service providers beyond our control and yet we can easily be embroiled in blame games.
The conundrums of the small business owners are not very different. It only gets aggravated by the fact they may also have a few employees carrying out different tasks. For example, a small accounting firm will have juniors. A complete overview of the status of all engagement at all time to readily address issues before they snowball into major problems is one of the critical factors for freelancers and small business owners to succeed.
